Tesla’s Model Y is becoming more than a way to get from A to B. The company has enabled vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability for compatible Model Y Premium variants in the United States and Puerto Rico, allowing owners to tap the SUV’s battery for portable power. It is a practical upgrade that turns one of the world’s best-known electric cars into a useful energy source for camping equipment, power tools and selected household appliances.
Model Y becomes a mobile power source
According to reports published on August 15, Tesla’s US$80 Outlet Adapter can deliver up to 2.4kW at 120 volts and 20 amps when used with the company’s Gen 3 Mobile Connector. The adapter provides two conventional outlets, bringing useful V2L functionality to Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive and All-Wheel Drive buyers. Compatibility is the important caveat: the feature depends on the correct onboard power-conversion hardware, and some earlier refreshed Model Y vehicles may not support it. The lower-priced Model Y Standard and Model 3 range are not currently listed as compatible.
The move closes part of a convenience gap with rivals. Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 has long promoted V2L as a lifestyle feature, while Kia offers similar capability on models including the EV6 and EV9. Ford’s F-150 Lightning can also supply external power, with higher-output configurations aimed at worksites and home backup. Tesla’s 2.4kW implementation is more modest, but it is enough for many real-world jobs and shows how software, charging hardware and the traction battery can add value long after the basic EV formula is established.
Electric transport broadens its reach
Elsewhere in the past day, commercial electrification took another step forward as PACCAR brand DAF and Swedish technology company Einride outlined plans to integrate Einride’s Level 4 autonomous-driving system into DAF’s X-series premium trucks. The combination of battery-electric drivetrains and highly automated operation is aimed at making freight movements more predictable, particularly on controlled logistics routes. It also highlights that the next EV contest will not be limited to passenger-car range; fleet uptime, charging costs and automation are becoming equally important battlegrounds.
Australia is also seeing the competitive map shift. A fresh Nikkei Asia report highlighted how Chinese manufacturers led by BYD are pressing into a market historically dominated by Japanese brands, using competitively priced electric models to build momentum. BYD’s expanding local range and aggressive value proposition add pressure not only to established petrol-car leaders but also to Tesla. For Australian buyers, that rivalry should mean more choice and a faster focus on charging speed, equipment and attainable pricing.
EV technology is even reshaping the classic-car world. California engineering specialist Bisimoto has revealed the SilvEV Ghost, a 1974 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow converted around a custom 600-horsepower, 400-volt liquid-cooled electric motor. It is a niche creation rather than a mass-market product, but it demonstrates the breadth of electrification: the same core technology can power a family crossover, an autonomous freight truck or a reimagined luxury classic.
What it means for EV drivers
For enthusiasts, Tesla’s V2L expansion is the most immediately relatable development. Range and charging speed still matter, but owners increasingly expect an EV battery to do more than move the vehicle. As Tesla, BYD and a widening field of competitors add practical energy features and sharper technology, the everyday usefulness of electric vehicles may become as persuasive as their performance or running costs.
