Tesla says its Robotaxi fleet has now travelled more than one million miles without an in-vehicle driver, a headline milestone arriving as the purpose-built Cybercab begins carrying public passengers in Austin. The figure gives Tesla fresh momentum in its long-running autonomy campaign, but it also shifts attention from demonstrations to the harder questions of safety, scale and everyday reliability.
A million-mile marker for Tesla
Tesla AI chief Ashok Elluswamy disclosed the milestone during the company’s Cybercab event, according to Teslarati. The total represents a sharp rise from the 380,000 unsupervised miles Tesla reported at its second-quarter update in late July, implying roughly 620,000 additional miles in about six weeks. Tesla’s service began in Austin in June 2025 with safety personnel aboard before expanding its driverless operations. It now operates Robotaxi services in several US cities, although California rules still require an onboard safety monitor in the San Francisco Bay Area. Tesla has not published a city-by-city breakdown of the million miles, so the number should be viewed as a company-reported operational benchmark rather than a complete public safety scorecard.
Cybercab turns the promise into a product
The milestone matters because Cybercab is not simply another Tesla with software switched on. The compact two-seater has no steering wheel or pedals and is designed specifically for autonomous ride-hailing. Public rides in Austin put paying users inside the most literal expression yet of Tesla’s camera-led autonomy strategy. The timing also raises the stakes: US safety regulators have opened an audit of how the unconventional vehicle was certified against applicable federal standards. Meanwhile, established autonomous operators are not standing still. Waymo has reported more than 200 million fully autonomous rider-only miles, illustrating both the size of the opportunity and the distance Tesla still has to cover.
Software becomes a bigger part of the car
Rivian supplied another reminder that modern EV competition extends well beyond batteries and range. Its 2026.31 software release upgrades both first- and second-generation R1S and R1T vehicles to RivianOS 2, bringing older models onto the same infotainment foundation used by the newer R2. For owners, a substantial over-the-air refresh can make a vehicle feel newer without a trip to the dealer. For manufacturers, it is a way to improve the ownership experience after delivery and build longer customer relationships. Tesla pioneered that expectation, but rivals are increasingly treating software updates as a core product feature rather than an occasional bonus.
Electrification moves into heavy industry
The transition is also spreading far beyond passenger cars. Chinese equipment manufacturer SANY reportedly delivered 200 electric heavy-duty haul trucks and more than 600 electric wheel loaders in a single month. Mining, ports and construction are demanding environments where predictable routes, high utilisation and large fuel bills can make electrification especially compelling. These machines will not attract the attention of a steering-wheel-free robotaxi, yet their potential impact on local noise, operating costs and diesel consumption could be significant.
For EV enthusiasts, the takeaway is that the next phase will be measured less by dramatic prototypes and more by accumulated evidence. Tesla’s million-mile claim is an important marker, Rivian’s software overhaul shows how EVs can improve after purchase, and SANY’s deliveries point to electric power moving into serious industrial work. The winners will be the companies that turn bold technology into dependable, transparent and widely available transport.
