Tesla is expanding the role of driver-assistance software from an optional co-pilot into a background safety net. The company says Full Self-Driving (Supervised) version 14.3.9 can activate during manual driving when it detects an imminent collision and judges that automatic emergency braking alone may not prevent it. Instead of merely slowing the car, the system may take directional control and steer around danger—a potentially important advance that also raises fresh questions about driver trust and software accountability.

FSD moves beyond emergency braking

According to Electrek’s report on Tesla’s announcement, the new active-safety feature is beginning to roll out with FSD Supervised v14.3.9. Tesla says it may intervene when a crash is imminent, when the driver appears heavily distracted, or when FSD has been disengaged accidentally. The distinction matters: conventional automatic emergency braking acts primarily through the brakes, while Tesla’s update can make a steering decision even when the driver is operating the vehicle manually. FSD remains a supervised, Level 2 driver-assistance system, so drivers must stay attentive and ready to take control.

The idea is technically compelling because braking is not always the safest or most effective escape route. An evasive manoeuvre could help when stopping distance is insufficient and an adjacent path is clear. Yet steering intervention carries its own risk if sensors misread a scene or software chooses the wrong trajectory. Tesla has not publicly detailed whether owners can disable this specific function or exactly how it decides that steering is preferable to braking. Real-world performance, transparent controls and a low false-positive rate will therefore be critical to whether owners see the feature as reassurance or unwanted interference.

BYD widens its affordable-EV attack

Meanwhile, BYD is preparing a larger sibling for one of the world’s most accessible electric cars. The forthcoming Great Seagull is due to go on sale in China by the end of 2026, positioned between the existing Seagull and Dolphin. Regulatory information cited by Electrek lists a 4,205mm length, 2,650mm wheelbase and 95kW motor, making it substantially larger and more powerful than the regular Seagull. Battery capacity and pricing remain unconfirmed, although reports point to newer Blade Battery and fast-charging technology. An overseas launch has not been confirmed, but a roomier, keenly priced hatch would give BYD another weapon in global markets.

BYD is also pushing harder on price in Britain. Its newly announced September sales campaign offers savings of up to £2,500 across selected battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models. The move follows rapid growth: the company reportedly registered more than 48,000 vehicles in the UK through August, up 98 percent year on year. That combination of broader model choice and aggressive finance deals illustrates the pressure facing established EV brands, including Tesla, as Chinese manufacturers turn scale and battery expertise into sharper showroom offers.

Software becomes an EV battleground

Rivian’s latest update shows that Tesla is not alone in treating software as a core vehicle feature. RivianOS 2 is rolling out across eligible R1 and R2 vehicles on a common software foundation, adding a redesigned interface, route alerts, richer graphics and expanded AI-assisted functions. Newer hardware receives Unreal Engine 5 visualisations, while first-generation R1 models retain Unreal Engine 4. Unifying the underlying platform should make future development faster while preserving support for older vehicles—an increasingly important promise as EVs age.

For EV enthusiasts, the day’s news points to two parallel races: making electric cars more affordable and making them smarter after they leave the factory. Tesla’s emergency steering intervention could become a meaningful safety milestone, but only careful deployment and clear driver control will earn confidence. At the same time, BYD’s expanding range and Rivian’s software overhaul ensure that innovation—and competitive pressure—will not slow down.
