Tesla’s minimalist door handles have become the centre of a sweeping safety action in China, where 2.98 million locally made Tesla vehicles are being recalled over concerns that occupants and rescuers may struggle to identify or operate the releases in an emergency. The action is part of China’s largest automotive recall involving hidden handles, affecting more than four million vehicles across several brands, and it puts one of the electric-car era’s most recognisable design trends under fresh scrutiny.
China’s recall puts EV door design in focus
The Tesla recall covers certain Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles. According to Tesla’s statement reported by the BBC, interior handles whose colour closely matches the surrounding trim can be difficult to recognise and use. That could become critical after a severe collision if the low-voltage electrical system fails. The remedy will include warning labels on the interior doors and a software update designed to lower the windows automatically following a crash. XPeng, Xiaomi and Geely vehicles are also included in the broader recall, underscoring that this is an industry-wide design issue rather than a problem confined to one manufacturer.
China has already announced rules that will prohibit fully hidden door handles on new cars from January 1, 2027, requiring a mechanical release on both the inside and outside of each door. The move follows mounting concern about crash access and power failures, including scrutiny after fatal incidents involving other EV brands. US regulators have also examined reports of Tesla handles becoming inoperable, while the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has floated the possibility of a formal emergency-exit standard. For buyers, the lesson is straightforward: sleek aerodynamics and clean styling cannot come at the expense of an obvious, dependable way out.
BYD loads its next flagship with new technology
While Tesla deals with the recall, BYD is preparing a technology showcase of its own. The Chinese manufacturer says its Sealion 08 flagship SUV will launch on September 2 in battery-electric and plug-in hybrid forms. The large SUV measures 5,115mm long and rides on a 3,030mm wheelbase, with five- and six-seat layouts planned. Reported equipment includes BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, flash-charging capability, “God’s Eye” 5.0 driver assistance, rear-wheel steering, air suspension and Cell-to-Body integration. The electric version is expected with battery choices reaching roughly 115kWh and a claimed range of up to 900km on China’s CLTC test cycle, a figure that should be treated as more optimistic than real-world or WLTP estimates.
The Sealion 08 shows how quickly the competitive benchmark is moving. Features once associated with premium European SUVs—including massaging second-row seats, a ceiling-mounted entertainment screen, a 25-speaker audio system and an onboard refrigerator—are increasingly being bundled into Chinese EVs. Pricing and export plans remain key unanswered questions, but BYD’s combination of battery manufacturing, fast charging and aggressive model expansion continues to pressure established carmakers. It also highlights a contrast in today’s EV market: manufacturers are racing to add sophisticated software and luxury technology while regulators insist that basic mechanical safety remain visible and intuitive.
A small Suzuki EV edges closer to Australia
At the opposite end of the market, Suzuki Australia has expressed strong interest in the e Sky, a compact electric kei car that could become one of the country’s most affordable EVs if it receives the green light. The 3,395mm-long city car targets 310km of range from a 26kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery, with an expected 47kW front motor and 50kW DC charging. A right-hand-drive version is already being developed for the UK, strengthening the business case for Australia. Suzuki says no local launch is confirmed, but the e Sky could help the brand meet tightening New Vehicle Efficiency Standard targets while giving urban buyers a genuinely small, efficient alternative.
