BYD has pulled the covers off its biggest electric statement yet: the Great Han, a full-size flagship sedan promising up to 1,008 kilometres of range on China’s CLTC test cycle. Official images released on July 27 show a sleek, technology-heavy rival aimed above the familiar mass-market EV field. For drivers watching the contest between BYD and Tesla, it is another sign that range, charging speed and premium design are becoming the next battleground.

A flagship built to travel farther

Also referred to as the Da Han in transliteration, the new sedan measures 5,256mm long, 1,999mm wide and 1,510mm high, riding on a 3,130mm wheelbase. That makes it larger than a Tesla Model S and gives BYD room to package a 102.3kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery. Reports based on Chinese regulatory information put the headline rear-wheel-drive model at 1,008km of CLTC range, while a dual-motor all-wheel-drive version is expected to produce as much as 570kW. Buyers should remember that CLTC figures are generally more optimistic than WLTP or EPA ratings, so a directly comparable real-world number will be lower.

The Great Han is nevertheless important because of the technology behind the number. BYD is expected to pair its second-generation Blade Battery with the company’s high-power Flash Charging system, potentially reducing the inconvenience of a large battery on long trips. Rear-wheel steering should also help this substantial sedan manoeuvre in tighter spaces. A fuller reveal is expected at the Chengdu Motor Show, where pricing, final variants and market timing should become clearer. For now, there is no confirmed Australian launch, but BYD’s rapid international expansion makes the flagship worth watching beyond China.

BYD broadens the attack

BYD also released fresh images of an updated Seal 06 EV ahead of its launch. Final battery and pricing details remain under wraps, yet the current Chinese-market car starts at 109,800 yuan—roughly half the local entry price quoted for a Tesla Model 3. The combination of a halo sedan such as the Great Han and a much more affordable Seal 06 illustrates BYD’s strategy: use common battery and electric-platform expertise to compete across several price bands rather than relying on one breakout model.

Tesla efficiency and autonomy stay in focus

Tesla remains central to this week’s EV conversation for different reasons. Elon Musk said self-driving capability for the Tesla Semi could arrive in about a year, placing the target around late 2026 or early 2027. It is an ambitious claim rather than a confirmed deployment schedule, and Tesla’s previous autonomy timelines warrant caution. Separately, an Out of Spec comparison found a Rivian R2 Performance used about 18% to 26% more energy than a Tesla Model Y Performance at tested road speeds, despite the pair carrying the same 105MPGe combined EPA rating. One independent test is not the final verdict, but it highlights how aerodynamics, software and drivetrain tuning can matter as much as the battery’s advertised capacity.

The takeaway for EV enthusiasts is that the industry is no longer chasing range in isolation. BYD’s Great Han combines a four-figure CLTC claim with rapid charging and luxury-car dimensions, while Tesla’s advantage in efficiency and its push toward commercial autonomy keep pressure on newcomers. The most useful answers will come when independent testing, charging curves, prices and export plans arrive—but the competition is already delivering more choice and faster technical progress.
