Tesla appears ready to give the refreshed Model Y a much sharper performance edge. A newly disclosed Chinese regulatory filing confirms a 659-kilometre driving-range rating for a dual-motor Model Y widely expected to become the new Performance flagship. The figures arrive at an important moment for Tesla, as the company works to keep its best-selling crossover competitive in China’s relentlessly fast-moving electric-car market.

A faster Model Y takes shape

According to CnEVPost’s report on the Chinese filing, the new variant uses a 78.4kWh battery pack supplied by LG Energy Solution. The pack weighs 448kg, while the vehicle’s curb weight is listed at 2,027kg. Its 659km figure is based on China’s optimistic CLTC test cycle, so real-world range and ratings in other markets will be lower. Even so, that number is substantial for a performance-focused electric SUV riding on 21-inch wheels.

The mechanical details strengthen the Performance theory. Tesla’s filing lists front and rear motors rated at 176kW and 291kW, respectively, for a combined nominal output of 467kW, plus a 250km/h top speed. Those figures sit well above the 201km/h maximum of the Model Y versions currently offered in China. Tesla has not formally announced the model’s name, price or launch timing, so the Performance badge remains an informed expectation rather than a confirmed product label. If launched, it would sit above the rear-wheel-drive, Long Range and six-seat Model Y L variants already competing for Chinese buyers.

BYD turns up the price pressure

Tesla’s performance play lands as BYD attacks from the value end. BYD has launched the Qin Max in China with battery-electric and plug-in hybrid versions priced from 99,900 to 143,900 yuan. The pure-electric range starts at 109,900 yuan and offers CLTC ratings of 530km or 630km. It also uses BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, with BYD claiming a 10-to-70-percent charge in about five minutes under suitable conditions. The Qin Max is a sedan rather than a direct Model Y rival, but its combination of range, rapid charging and aggressive pricing shows why every Tesla update in China now carries greater urgency.

Battery service becomes the next battleground

The competition is extending beyond the showroom. CATL says it plans to expand its directly operated Ning Service battery-repair network to 100 cities worldwide in the second half of 2026. The battery giant is targeting repair times of 72 hours or less and promoting precision repairs instead of automatically replacing an entire damaged pack. That could matter enormously for EV ownership costs, insurance premiums and used-car confidence. Meanwhile, Ford is recalling 86,543 Mustang Mach-E SUVs in the United States because rear-quarter-window trim may detach, a reminder that conventional manufacturing quality remains just as important as battery innovation.

For EV enthusiasts, the day’s developments point in one direction: buyers are getting more range, faster charging and broader model choice, while the industry starts tackling the less glamorous challenge of affordable long-term repair. Tesla’s probable Model Y Performance may grab the headlines, but BYD’s pricing and CATL’s service push show that the next phase of the EV race will be fought across the entire ownership experience.
