China has put electric-car safety under a brighter spotlight with its largest vehicle recall on record, covering about 4.3 million cars and placing Tesla at the centre of the action. Reuters reported on August 26 that the campaign targets a basic but critical concern: whether occupants can quickly find and operate a mechanical door release if an EV loses electrical power after a crash. Nearly 3 million Teslas are affected, making this a story with consequences well beyond China.

Door design becomes a global safety issue

Tesla accounts for roughly 2.98 million vehicles in the recall, while several Chinese brands are also involved. Flush electronic handles became an EV styling signature because they look clean and can reduce aerodynamic drag, but the emergency backup is only useful if passengers and rescuers can locate it immediately. China’s intervention signals that regulators are no longer treating door-release design as a minor usability detail. For manufacturers, the lesson is clear: clever packaging must still work intuitively when power, lighting and screens are unavailable. Owners should watch for official instructions tied to their vehicle identification number rather than assuming every model in every market is included.

BYD pushes battery endurance

At the same time, BYD’s premium Yangwang brand is promoting a very different kind of durability. CarNewsChina reported that a production Yangwang U7 electric sedan covered 30,000 kilometres in eight days, 19 hours and 58 minutes in Nanning. The company says the car endured temperatures above 36 degrees Celsius, ran its air conditioning throughout and completed more than 350 fast-charging sessions. Its battery reportedly retained 98.7 per cent of capacity at the finish. Those are manufacturer-run test results rather than an independent long-term ownership study, but the combination of sustained high-speed running, heat and repeated rapid charging makes the demonstration notable.

BYD also confirmed a more practical Australian arrival: the M9 plug-in hybrid people mover is due in the fourth quarter of 2026. Local reports say the seven- or eight-seat model will offer up to 145 kilometres of electric range, positioning it as an electrified rival to the Kia Carnival and Hyundai Staria. It is not a pure EV, yet that substantial electric range could cover many school runs and commutes without starting the petrol engine. The M9 broadens BYD’s pitch from affordable electric cars and SUVs into large-family transport, a segment where fully electric choices remain limited in Australia.

Tesla keeps US inventory lean

In the United States, a separate Tesla development points to changing production discipline. Forbes reported that the US$36,990 base Model 3 was showing estimated delivery in early 2027, while new Model 3 and Model Y inventory had become scarce. The report noted that Tesla delivered more Model 3 and Model Y vehicles than it produced during the second quarter, helping reduce stock accumulated earlier in the year. That does not automatically prove a demand boom: leaner production after the end of the US federal EV tax credit may also explain the longer wait.

For EV enthusiasts, this news cycle captures an industry growing up fast. Battery systems are being pushed through tougher endurance demonstrations, electrified vehicles are entering new family-focused categories, and regulators are scrutinising details that matter in an emergency. Range and acceleration still sell cars, but safety simplicity, reliable charging and real-world durability will increasingly decide which brands earn lasting trust.
