BYD’s smallest electric car is making an unexpectedly big entrance in Japan. The BYD Racco has attracted 1,002 orders just two weeks after going on sale, an encouraging early result for a Chinese manufacturer trying to break into one of the world’s most brand-loyal car markets. More strikingly, the total has already crossed BYD’s initial 1,000-order benchmark, while the company is now aiming for 10,000 reservations by the end of 2026.

A small EV with broad appeal

Launched on July 28, the four-seat Racco is built to Japan’s tightly regulated kei-car dimensions, measuring 3,395mm long and 1,475mm wide. Prices run from 2.14 million to 2.497 million yen before subsidies, or roughly US$13,470 to US$15,720. Buyers can choose 22.4kWh or 35.84kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery packs, with claimed range spanning 210km to 320km depending on specification. A 47kW front motor, 4.8-metre turning radius and 280-litre boot underline its urban focus, while standard adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking give the compact package useful safety technology.

The order mix suggests customers are not simply chasing the lowest price. BYD says the flagship Racco 300 Premium accounts for 80% of reservations, compared with 14% for the 300 Plus and 6% for the entry Racco 200. Customer data also shows a diverse audience: 35.7% are adding the EV as another household vehicle, another 35.7% are replacing an existing car, and 26.8% are first-time buyers. That matters because the Racco is challenging the home-grown Nissan Sakura, which starts at 2,448,600 yen and recorded 14,093 Japanese deliveries in 2025.

Charging and battery scrutiny intensifies

The Racco’s charging specifications are modest rather than headline-grabbing. The smaller-battery version peaks at 35.8kW DC, while larger-battery variants can accept up to 49.7kW through Japan’s CHAdeMO connector. Elsewhere, charging hardware continues to accelerate: EVgo plans to deploy Tesla V4-derived chargers in the United States, with up to 500kW capability and the first sites expected to operate in the second half of 2026. The contrast shows how EV infrastructure is splitting by use case: compact city cars need affordability and convenient overnight charging, while highway hubs increasingly compete on maximum power.

BYD is also facing closer scrutiny as its battery technology becomes more prominent. China’s internet regulator has named a blogger in an enforcement case concerning disputed tests of BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery. The tests recorded different temperatures from external probes and the vehicle’s battery-management system during extreme high-current charging. Importantly, the reported measurements do not by themselves establish a defect, but the episode highlights the need for transparent, repeatable test methods as charging currents and public claims rise.

What comes next

For EV enthusiasts, the Racco’s early momentum is a reminder that electrification will not be won only by expensive long-range SUVs. Small, attainable cars designed around local driving habits can open the market to new buyers. Sustaining that momentum will require BYD to deliver strong reliability, clear battery communication and dependable charging support—but passing 1,000 Japanese orders in a fortnight is a promising start.
